Since DECwrite is supported by Digital's[TM] Network Application Services (NAS[TM]), which allow application software to work in a heterogeneous computer environment, you can transfer documents and use DECwrite in a similar fashion on all its platforms. Purpose of This Document Who Should Use This Document This document is for all DECwrite users. For More Information For more information about the DECwrite document publishing application, see the following: o DECwrite User's Guide-a complete description of the features supplied by DECwrite V3.1. o DECwrite Online Help-detailed information about all DECwrite menus, dialog boxes, tasks, and procedures. To use the online help, use the Help menu in the DECwrite window once you have started DECwrite. o DECwrite Tutorials-an online introduction to selected DECwrite concepts and operations. To use the Tutorials, choose Tutorial from the Help menu once you have started DECwrite. vii o DECwrite Quick Reference Document for your platform-a summary of basic DECwrite operations, menu items, and keyboard equivalents. o DECwrite Document Converters for Microsoft Windows- this online document gives detailed information about the document converters supplied with DECwrite. During installation, an ASCII text version of this document is installed on the system in the following directory: C:\DECWRITE\EXAMPLES\WIN_CNV.TXT Conventions The following conventions are used in this guide: _________________________________________________________________ Convention____________Meaning____________________________________ DECwrite The term DECwrite refers to the ______________________DECwrite[TM]_software._____________________ ix 1 _________________________________________________________________ User Notes This chapter describes supplemental information for DECwrite users. 1.1 Problems Fixed Since DECwrite V3.0 The main problems addressed in this release include the following: o DECwrite V2.1 incompatibility problems have been resolved; these fixes include: - V2.1 preference file (startup.ini) (WRITE$STARTUP.INI) is now fully compatible with DECwrite V3.0 and DECwrite V3.1 - V2.1 documents containing tables in page layouts can now be successfully opened - V2.1 documents containing tables that are closely packed together can now be formatted correctly. o Blank pages no longer appear in multi-page tables. o Index information is no longer lost after saving document. o Table of Contents can now be created at the start of documents using the Manual Style File. o The following CDA interoperability problems have been fixed: - Indented Paragraphs with labels are now viewed correctly in the CDA viewer or can be printed using the Converter Library Postscript converter. - Indented Paragraphs in lists are now viewed correctly in the CDA viewer or can be printed using the Converter Library Postscript converter. 1-1 o The non-display of .EPS files preference toggle button is now fixed. o German words that hyphenate on a c-k boundary now hyphenated correctly after re-opening a document. o Linking to a document containing only links now works correctly. o The infinite loop problem when entering text before a footnote is fixed. o The table resize now works correctly. o Paragraph and title indent information is no longer lost. o The problem with editing a document in a second window is now fixed. o The problem with Global Replace occasionally replacing two words instead of one is now fixed. o The problem with changing to "None" style file is fixed. 1.2 Documentation and Online Help Notes The DECwrite User's Guide includes platform-specific information for your platform (in the previous version of DECwrite, the platform-specific information was in a separate supplement). The DECwrite Quick Reference Card provided with DECwrite V2.0 has been discontinued. Instead, DECwrite V3.1 includes a quick reference document that summarizes DECwrite features. A hardcopy version of this document is provided with the DECwrite distribution kit. During installation, DECwrite places a PostScript[R] version of this document in the following location: C:\DECWRITE\EXAMPLES \DW_REF.EPS The DECwrite Tutorial has been updated to reflect the new features in DECwrite V3.0. It has not been updated for DECwrite V3.1. The tutorial is now provided in color. 1-2 1.3 Windows Notes The following sections describe notes about using DECwrite for Microsoft Windows. 1.3.1 AUTOEXEC.BAT file PROBLEM: The DECwrite installation procedure makes changes to AUTOEXEC.BAT. In some cases where the AUTOEXEC.BAT file is complex, the DECwrite installation program may make incorrect changes to this file. Recover the old version of your AUTOEXEC.BAT file (this will be called AUTOEXEC.BAK) and manually make the changes recommended by DECwrite. 1.3.2 DECwrite Icons PROBLEM: When you reinstall DECwrite on a system, new icons are created. That is, the existing DECwrite icons are not reused. WORKAROUND: Delete the extra icons after DECwrite has been installed. 1.3.3 Document Converters Sometimes Not Found PROBLEM: If you install DECwrite on a PC that has the CDA Base Services software installed, the converters installed as part of the CDA Base Services installation are not available using the DECwrite Import and Export dialog boxes. WORKAROUND: Copy the converter DLL files to the C:\DECWRITE\DDIF directory directory (the directory in which DECwrite is installed if it is not installed in the C:\DECWRITE directory). The input and output converter DLL files are named Rformat.DLL and Wformat.DLL respectively. For example, the RTF input converter is called RRTF.DLL and the RTF output converter is called WRTF.DLL. Instead of copying the DLL files, you can redefine the CDAPATH environment variable to include both directions. Note that if you install another version of the CDA Base Services, you may need to redefine the CDAPATH, CDALIB, and CDAFONT environment variables. 1-3 1.3.4 CDA Environment Variables Already Defined PROBLEM: The DECwrite installation fails if you already have the CDAPATH, CDALIB, and CDAFONT environment variables defined and they reference directories on another disk on which there is not enough space for the DECwrite installation program to put the CDA files that DECwrite needs. WORKAROUND: Free some space on the disk referenced by the above environment variables. 1.3.5 Interaction With Some PC Applications PROBLEM: Enabling the Autosave feature in DECwrite can cause DECwrite to terminate with a General Protection Fault if you are using other applications that use Microsoft Windows system timers. Applications that are known to be affected are After Dark and Network Scheduler 3. WORKAROUND: Do not use the application that causes the General Protection Fault while you are using DECwrite. Alternatively, disable the DECwrite Autosave feature using the DECwrite Preferences dialog box. 1.3.6 Scaling When Pasting From the Windows Clipboard PROBLEM: If you paste a bitmap from the Windows clipboard into DECwrite, the scale factor of the DECwrite window is not taken into account. WORKAROUND: Ensure that the DECwrite window is displayed full size before pasting from the clipboard. 1.3.7 Shareware ATM Fonts Corrupt Characters From Symbol Font PROBLEM: Using Adobe[TM] Type Manager [TM] to install some shareware Type 1 PostScript(R) fonts might corrupt the registered trademark character in the Symbol Font. WORKAROUND: Use ATM to remove the shareware fonts. 1-4 1.3.8 Large Number of True Type Fonts Causes DECwrite to Crash PROBLEM: Having a large number of True Type fonts, installed may cause DECwrite to crash, particularly on machines with limited amounts of memory. WORKAROUND: Reduce the number of True Type fonts in Windows using the control panel. WORKAROUND: Increase the amount of memory on the machine. 1.3.9 Some Keys Do Not Function When Using The LK250 Keyboard PROBLEM: Special configuration and actions are needed to use a Digital LK250 keyboard with DECwrite for Windows. ________________________ Note ________________________ Select the LK250 keyboard using the Configurations Options button when you install DECwrite for Windows. ______________________________________________________ WORKAROUND: You must use Alt-F17 to toggle the LK250 from Special mode, which emulates the 81-key keyboard, to normal mode. When the keyboard is in normal mode, the Special indicator located near the top of the keyboard should NOT be on. To use the keyboard with other Microsoft Windows applications, you must press Alt-F17 again to toggle the keyboard back into Special mode. 1.4 Color Notes 1.4.1 Deleted Colors Reappear If Included in Style File PROBLEM: When you delete colors from a document, but not from the referenced style file, the colors will be placed back in the document the next time it is opened. WORKAROUND: Either delete the colors from the style file itself (but this will affect all documents referencing the style file), or manually re-delete the colors from the local document each time. If you find you have to do this regularly, you may find it worthwhile to make a private copy of the style file. 1-5 1.4.2 Screen Sometimes Does Not Refresh Properly PROBLEM: When a textblock is colored, typing in the textblock changes the color until the screen is refreshed with CTRL/W. WORKAROUND: Use CTRL/W to refresh the screen display. 1.4.3 Mail Merge Does Not Correctly Handle Color Content PROBLEM: Mail merge does not correctly handle color content. Color is only applied to the content of the first record. Subsequent records are black and white only. 1.5 Conditional Content Notes 1.5.1 Nested Conditional Content In A Table PROBLEM: Text Content included in a conditional table with conditional cell content is not always displayed correctly. WORKAROUND: Setting both conditions to "On" and setting "Display Active Content" may work. 1.5.2 Interaction of Tables and Conditional Content PROBLEM: You may encounter problems with the interaction of conditional content and tables when the table is conditionalized and when the table contains conditionalized content. In particular, when Show Active Content is turned on, tables or the content of tables which are contained within conditions whose state is Off may be deleted from the document. WORKAROUND: If your document includes conditional tables or tables that have conditional content, save the document before manipulating the conditions. 1.5.3 Conditional Content and Linked Documents PROBLEM: Problems exist in the interaction of conditional content and linked documents. Documents can end up in an invalid state when they are unlinked, for example, when there is a start marker and no end marker, or vice versa. WORKAROUND: Do not insert a condition that starts in the master document and finishes in a linked document (or vice versa) and do not insert conditions that starts in one linked document and finishes in another linked document. 1-6 1.5.4 Conditional Content and Mail Merge PROBLEM: Mail Merge Documents that start with conditional content data can cause problems. WORKAROUND: Do not begin Mail Merge documents with conditional content. PROBLEM: When you use Mail Merge with a document containing conditional content, the first output document includes the conditional content whether the condition is turned on or off. WORKAROUND: Include a dummy record after the header record in the record file, then discard the first document produced by Mail Merge. 1.5.5 Lists Sometimes Numbered Incorrectly Problems may exist in the interaction of Numbered Lists and conditional content. List numbering may not be correctly updated when conditions are turned on/off. WORKAROUND: None 1.5.6 Cross-References To Inactive Content Are Displayed PROBLEM: Cross-references to conditional content that is inactive is displayed, although it should not be. In addition, the label or page number of the referenced content may be inaccurate. 1.5.7 Hidden Content Symbol May Be Displayed Erroneously PROBLEM: When the content of a table cell is conditional, the # hidden symbol is sometimes displayed for content that is active. 1.6 Export to Bookreader Notes The following sections describe information concerning the Export to Bookreader feature. ________________________ Note ________________________ The Export to Bookreader feature is now supported on OpenVMS Alpha systems. ______________________________________________________ 1-7 1.7 Image Notes 1.7.1 Deleting External Image Files PROBLEM: If you import, include or make a local copy of a previously linked image, you must not delete the image file until you have saved the DECwrite document. If the image is deleted prior to saving the document, the image will not be included in the document, and the journal from that session will not play back correctly. WORKAROUND:If the image file is to be deleted, do so after the DECwrite document has been saved. 1.7.2 Pasting 256 color bitmaps PROBLEM: Trying to paste a 256 color bitmap into DECwrite using Paste Special will sometimes cause DECwrite to exit without any warning, depending on the size of the bitmap. 1.8 File Selection Notes The following sections provide information about choosing files for linking, editing, and other DECwrite functions that require you to choose a file name from a dialog box. 1.9 Table of Contents and Index Notes 1.9.1 Index Entry with an Invalid Page Number PROBLEM: If you insert an index in a document on a page that appears before the index entries, and the insertion changes the index entries' page numbers, the index will be incorrect. The resulting index number will either be zero or the old page's page number. WORKAROUND: The index must follow the pages on which the index entries appear. 1.9.2 Long Lines in Table of Contents PROBLEM: Multiline titles in a table of contents wrap at the text block's right edge instead of at the page number margin. WORKAROUND: Use a hard return to re-wrap the line. 1-8 1.9.3 Problems Regenerating Table of Contents The following sections describe known restrictions when regenerating a table of contents. 1.9.3.1 Custom Page Layout PROBLEM: If you create custom layout (for example, add a textblock or change the size or location of existing text blocks) on a page used in a table of contents, those pages will not be deleted when the table of contents is regenerated. The pages are marked as customized, and thus are not deleted. WORKAROUND: Create page styles with the appropriate layout, and specify those in the Table of Contents style. 1.9.3.2 Change Pages Enabled PROBLEM: If you regenerate a table of contents for a document with the change pages feature enabled, DECwrite inserts extraneous blank pages. WORKAROUND: Delete the newly created blank pages. 1.9.3.3 Regenerate Table Of Contents When Opening Master Document PROBLEM: When you open a document that links to several other documents, Table of Contents entries for titles in the linked documents will not be correct until you regenerate the Table of Contents. For example, some page numbers in the Table of Contents may appear in a format such as "". This means the Table of Contents must be regenerated. WORKAROUND: Regenerate the Table of Contents before printing or exporting the document. 1.9.3.4 Delete Table Of Contents With Manual Style File PROBLEM: "Delete TOC" does not work with the Manual style file. WORKAROUND: Manually delete the Table of Contents using delete pages. 1-9 1.10 Style File Notes The following sections describe information about using and modifying style files. 1.10.1 Problems Opening a Document After Modifying the Style File PROBLEM: DECwrite supports different types of styles, such as title, list, footnote, and paragraph styles. If, while editing a style file, you delete a style and assign the same name to a different type of style, you may have problems when you later open a document that uses that style file. WORKAROUND: Within a style file, do not delete a style of one type and then use the same name for a style of a different type. If you must assign the same name to a different style type, make sure the deleted style is not used in any documents that use the style file. In general, if you make extensive changes to a style file, save the original version of the style file until you are sure all documents that use the style file can be opened and saved safely and that they appear correctly formatted. 1.10.2 Circular Style File References PROBLEM: When creating a document, DECwrite does not detect cases where: o A document is linked to itself as a style file o A document is linked to a style file which has links that refer back to themselves or to the base document These documents are said to have circular references. When such a document is saved and then opened, DECwrite displays a message stating that there is a circular reference. WORKAROUND: To find and remove the circular reference, you must follow the chain of references. 1-10 1.10.3 Problem Choosing an Alternate Style File PROBLEM: A new style file selected in the Alternate Style File dialog box is not saved and the dialog box appears again the next time you open the document. WORKAROUND: You may have exited or closed the document immediately after changing the style file. Be sure to choose File => Save before exiting the document. Style Files Must Use Private Library Links PROBLEM: Style files should not use "With Document" links. WORKAROUND: If a style file contains links, the File Location Type for those links must be Private Library or System Library. This is a restriction only for style files that you want to use with documents that reside in different directories. 1.10.4 Multiple Style Files Must Use the Same Document Size PROBLEM: If the style file for your document links to another style file, and the two style files use different page sizes, incorrect page sizes will appear in your document. WORKAROUND: All style file documents that are used together must have the same document page size. 1.11 Macro Notes 1.11.1 Colon and Angle Brackets Not Allowed as Macro Trigger Key PROBLEM: You cannot use the following keys as macro trigger keys. If you do, you will not be able to access your other macros or editor keypad keys requiring a Gold key sequence: o Gold (PF1) colon (:) o Colon (:) o Left Angle Brackets (<) o Right Angle Bracket (>) 1.11.2 Macros and the Print Dialog Box PROBLEM: It is not possible to create a DECwrite macro that sets up various options in the Print dialog box. 1-11 1.11.3 Function Bar Color Dialog Boxes Used in Macros PROBLEM: The function bar color dialog boxes are not displayed during playback of macros. WORKAROUND: Do not use a macro sequence to launch a Function Bar dialog. Instead, use the Text Attributes, Graphics, and Table Attributes dialog boxes. 1.11.4 Use of the Do key in a Macro PROBLEM: If you record a macro that contains a Do key sequence, this key sequence be performed during recording of the macro. However, the Do key sequence will be performed during playback of the macro. 1.12 Table Notes 1.12.1 Nested Tables Are Not Supported PROBLEM: This feature has been retired. WORKAROUND: Nested tables created with older versions of DECwrite can be edited with DECwrite V3.0 and V3.1. 1.12.2 Split Tables Always Start on New Page PROBLEM: When a table is split across multiple pages, the first part of the table will always start on a new page, even if there is room remaining on the current page. WORKAROUND: Use Control-P or Control-L to manually insert page breaks within the table at the desired rows. 1.12.3 Table Bottom Rule Sometime Not Visible PROBLEM: The bottom rule of parts of multi-page tables is sometimes not visible. 1.12.4 Table Join Only Works On First Two Selected Tables PROBLEM: Joining more than two selected tables does not work. 1.12.5 Applying Table Styles To Multi-Page Tables PROBLEM: When a table style is applied to a multi-page table, all parts of the table on different pages are modified individually (i.e. as if they were entirely seperate tables). 1-12 1.12.6 Table Cells Cannot Flow Across Pages PROBLEM: If a large amount of text is inserted into a table cell, the table will not fit on a page and will not be broken across table chunks. WORKAROUND: Resize the table cell so that the entire text fits onto the page. 1.12.7 Importing Large Text Files Into Table Cells PROBLEM: Importing large text files using the As Is option in the Import Text File dialog box causes the table cell to overflow as described in Section 1.12.6. WORKAROUND: None. 1.12.8 Page Styles That Contain Trim Texblocks Containing Tables PROBLEM: A page style that contains a Trim textblock which includes a table will cause a document to be formatted incorrectly. The user may notice textblocks missing in the main body of each page and navigation around the document is difficult. WORKAROUND: Insert the Trim Textblock inside a Fixed Frame and globally reapply the page style. 1.13 Search Notes 1.13.1 Search does not ignore hidden symbols PROBLEM: Find will not locate content which includes hidden symbols, e.g. Find will not locate "Hi Bob" in "Hi {Bob}" or "Hi+ Bob" (where + represents the anchor point for a frame, for example). 1.13.2 Search Does Not Always Return Correct Order PROBLEM: Searching does not locate instances of the search string within table cells or in textblocks within graphics in the same sequential order as instances in the content containing the tables or graphics. 1-13 1.13.3 Special Characters in Search Expressions PROBLEM: DECwrite includes several search capabilities, including the ability to search for special characters (such as end-of-paragraph markers and frame anchor points). You can also use search expressions to search for combinations of characters, such as all words that begin with L and include an M somewhere else in the word. However, you cannot combine these two features by using search expressions to search for special characters. For more information about search expressions and searching for special characters, see the DECwrite User's Guide. 1.13.4 Labels Not Found on Backward Searches PROBLEM: Backward searches do not find all label text. WORKAROUND: Perform a forward search if label text must be included in the search string. 1.14 Printing Notes 1.14.1 EPS Files Containing TIFF Headers May Not Print PROBLEM: Printing a EPS file containing a TIFF header may not print. 1.14.2 Objects Can Be Too Complex to Print PROBLEM: It is possible to have an object so complex that it exceeds the hardware capability of a given PostScript printer. As a result, an attempt to print a document with that object will fail. For example, a polyline with more than 1500 segments cannot be printed on some printers. Another example is a complex drawing (such as the world map from the clip art collection) filled with a pattern (such as basket weave). WORKAROUND: Depending on the complexity of the document and the configuration of your printer, you may be able to acknowledge the "Printer is Stalled" message box and resume the print job. You may also try to increase the various timeout controls of your printer through the Printer Configure dialog box in the Control Panel. WORKAROUND: Simplify the object if possible. For example, with the complex polyline, create it from several polylines, each with fewer segments. 1-14 1.14.3 Printing to Typesetters PROBLEM: Documents with page sizes other than 8+ x 11 inches will not print correctly on some PostScript typesetters. The image is cut off at 11 inches or is incorrectly positioned so as to be partially off the paper. WORKAROUND: DECwrite does not support PPD (PostScript Printer Description) files, thus does not know about various device-specific setup commands. It is possible to add a line to the PostScript file to set the correct information for a particular device. For example, to set an 11 x 17 inch page on a Linotype L300 typesetter, where the desired width, height, margin and orientation have been defined (defaults are width = 792 (11 inches) and height = 612 (8.5 inches)): statusdict begin width height margin orientation setpageparams end 1.14.4 Known problems when using various printers PROBLEM: Printing using a PljIIP can cause DECwrite to crash. PROBLEM: Printing some images using a Lj259 can cause DECwrite to crash. PROBLEM: Page breaks may be ignored when printing to a Panasonic 1124. 1.14.5 Text attributes are printed incorrectly PROBLEM: On some printers, certain text attribute are printed incorrectly. This affects the Underline, Superscript, Subscript and Redline attributes. For example, underline appears as a large dark line under the text. This happens only for TrueType fonts. WORKAROUND: Disable TrueType fonts from the Control Panel and use ATM and printer resident fonts instead. 1.15 Linking and Data Block Notes 1-15 1.15.1 Data Block Graphic Attributes Cannot Be Changed PROBLEM: The graphic attributes of data blocks cannot be modified. WORKAROUND: The data block can be placed in a frame on which the graphics attributes are set. However, any fill attributes of the frame will not be visible under the data block. 1.15.2 Double Clicking on an Unlinked Data block PROBLEM: If you double click on a data block which is not linked to an application, DECwrite will display the following message. Invocation has failed 1.15.3 Messages on Link to Document PROBLEM: When documents are linked together, any that use a different style file from the parent (top-level) document will have their style file changed. It is possible to get extra messages about these style file changes. WORKAROUND: Starting with DECwrite V2.0, you must use one style for all linked documents. Be sure to use File => Change Style File to reformat your subdocuments with the same, common style file before you create the links. 1.15.4 Messages on Local Copy From Link PROBLEM: When using Modify Link to make a local copy of a formerly linked object, the following message will be incorrectly displayed: "Please select a link or move to a page in a linked document" 1.15.5 Copying Data Blocks Between Documents PROBLEM: If you copy or cut and paste a "With Document" data block from one document to another in a different directory, DECwrite does not adjust the File Location Type properly. For example, assume that you are working on two documents: o [williams]report.doc and [williams.memos]memo.doc on an OpenVMS system 1-16 o c:\report.doc and c:\memo.doc on a Microsoft Windows system o /usr/users/williams/report.doc and /usr/user/williams /memos/memo.doc on an ULTRIX system In addition, report.doc is linked to an image whose File Location Type is "With Document." Cutting the image from report.doc and pasting it into memo.doc does not change the File Location Type to "Private Library." WORKAROUND: Use the Modify Link dialog box on the Links menu to adjust the File Location Type properly. In this example, you would change it to be "Private Library" or "Network Library." 1.15.6 Saving a Document with Links to a Different Directory PROBLEM: When saving a document that contains "With Document" application links or data links, the linked-to files are not copied to the new directory. WORKAROUND: If appropriate, use a File Location Type of "Private Library" or copy the linked-to files to the new directory. 1.15.7 OLE-Object Linking and Embedding 1.15.7.1 OLE Error 27 PROBLEM: With some versions of Pathworks (for example, V4.1), OLE Error 27 may be reported when a server application is run, and the application's output is saved on a Pathworks served disk, and a copy of some of the content is pasted into DECwrite using Paste Link (to create an OLE Link). WORKAROUND: Save the output from the server application on a native DOS disk. 1.15.7.2 Miscellaneous Restrictions PROBLEM: The Links dialog box may not list the page number of OLE Links or Embedded Links. For data links, the page number is shown in the wrong position (before the Update column entries rather than after them). 1-17 PROBLEM: Double clicking on embedded objects and OLE objects does not start the server application when the "DECwrite for Windows" editing preference is used. This works when the "DECwrite for Motif" editing preference is used. PROBLEM: LiveLinks connections in documents that are saved using DECwrite for Windows do not transfer successfully into DECwrite on other platforms. PROBLEM: Live Links to some formats when linked "with document" actually stores the file as "private library" in the DECwrite document. Modifying the link to "with document" appears to work, but does not actually have any effect. PROBLEM: In the Links dialog box, when there is a link to an OLE object, and the Manual Update radio button is pressed, and the "Update Now" button pushed, the label in the "Update Now" button may disappear. PROBLEM: When a document containing links to subdocuments is saved by DECwrite, a DDIS/DDIF read error may be reported when the document is subsequently read by DECwrite. PROBLEM: When a document containing Embedded Links to Microsoft Chart is saved by DECwrite, a DDIS/DDIF read error may be reported when the document is subsequently read by DECwrite. PROBLEM: Double clicking on embedded objects and OLE objects does not start the server application when the "DECwrite for Windows" keyboard preference is in use. It works when the "DECwrite for Motif" keyboard preference is in use. 1.16 Journaling Notes 1.16.1 Font Changes and Journal Files PROBLEM: If you add new fonts to DECwrite on one system, you can play back DECwrite journal files only on that system or on systems having the same font environment. To have the same font environment, you must have identical: o Font initialization files 1-18 o Screen font files o Printer font files o Font metric files If you do not follow this practice, fonts accessed in the original journal file may not appear on the screen or in the resulting .doc file. Instead, the default font family and spacing (Times) will replace those font references. WORKAROUND: Replay the journal on a system that has the same font environment. 1.16.2 Journal Recovery When Document Name Is Changed PROBLEM: If you are editing a document A and include a document B, and then use Save As to save to B, you will not be able to recover the session successfully, because you have overwritten the previous contents of document B. WORKAROUND: Do not change the state of dependent files during a session. 1.16.3 Journals from Earlier Versions Used with DECwrite PROBLEM: In general it is not possible to successfully play back journals recorded by earlier versions of DECwrite. In some cases, attempting such a replay will cause DECwrite to crash. Play back journals before upgrading to DECwrite V3.1. 1.16.4 Journaling does not start automatically after a crash PROBLEM: The next time you start DECwrite after it has crashed when editing a document, it does not automatically attempt to replay the journal file that it created. WORKAROUND: Start DECwrite with the journal filename as the file in the initial Open File dialog box. 1.17 Spell Check Notes The following sections describe information about spell checking DECwrite documents. 1-19 1.17.1 "Do Not Hyphenate" Markers Not Always Recognized PROBLEM: "Do Not Hyphenate" markers are treated as word breaks during spell checking. WORKAROUND: Place marker at the beginning or end of the word. 1.17.2 Spell Check Dialog Box Disappears After Switching Input Focus to Another Window PROBLEM: If you start Spell Check and then select any other window (for example, a DECterm window, or the file selection dialog box for any other application), the Spell Check dialog box disappears, and DECwrite displays the message "Canceled." WORKAROUND: When using the Spell Check, complete your work before selecting another window. ________________________ Note ________________________ Spell Check Word and Spell Check All both operate on a select region. You can resume spell checking where you left off by creating a select region starting with the word after the last word you checked. ______________________________________________________ 1.17.3 Spell Checking Words with "Do Not Hyphenate" Symbols PROBLEM: If you spell check a word that contains a "Do Not Hyphenate" symbol, the Spell Check software will identify the word as two words, separated by the "Do Not Hyphenate" symbol. WORKAROUND: Place the "Do Not Hyphenate" symbol before the word and not within the word. 1.17.4 Spell Checking Of Index Entries PROBLEM: When creating index entries, if you place the cursor inside a word and then use the Index Actions item (on the Elements menu) to add the word as an index entry, the word is added properly. However, subsequent spell checking operations will flag the indexed word as a misspelling. WORKAROUND: Place the cursor just before or just after the word when adding it as an index entry. 1-20 1.18 Cross-References and Variables Notes 1.18.1 Variables that Wrap Across Lines PROBLEM: Variables can be assigned to lines of text that wrap across line breaks. However, there are two restrictions associated with multiline variables: o If the variable is on a page style, you will notice that the wrapping is removed when you display the page style. Instead of wrapping to the next line, the variable will extend beyond the end of the first line. o Elsewhere in your document, multiline variables sometimes do not wrap after certain editing operations. WORKAROUND: To reformat a multiline variable on a page style, force DECwrite to reformat the line by deleting and re-inserting a character near the beginning of the line. To reformat a variable elsewhere in your document: 1. Choose Utilities => Variables to display the Variables dialog box. 2. Select the variable in the list box. 3. Click on Define. DECwrite will reformat the line of text and the variable will wrap to the next line. 1.18.2 Multiline Cross References and Align Line PROBLEM: You cannot use the Align Line or WPS-PLUS Center command on any line with a Cross reference. If you do, DECwrite V3.1 will not be able to read the document. WORKAROUND: Do one of the following: o Use the alignment option box in the function bar o Choose Format => Paragraph Attributes and use the Paragraph Attributes dialog box to align the line o Apply a style with the appropriate alignment 1-21 1.18.3 Copying Multiline Cross-References PROBLEM: If there are multiline cross-references in a page style or in a text block inside a frame, when you insert a page or paste the frame, the cross-reference text will not be properly formatted. Instead, it all be in one line. WORKAROUND: Any action that causes reformatting (editing the paragraph or using the Repaginate command) will correct the error. 1.18.4 Multiline Cross-References Do Not Hyphenate PROBLEM: Multiline cross-references do not get hyphenated. When they occur in a justified paragraph, spacing is used to justify the line. 1.19 Graphics and Frames Notes 1.19.1 In-Margin Frames Within a Table PROBLEM: An in-margin frame may be placed anywhere within a table, but it cannot be moved outside the table's boundaries. WORKAROUND: An extra table column at the far left can be created to contain in-margin frames. 1.19.2 Cannot Align Graphics Text Lines Outside a Frame PROBLEM: You cannot align graphics lines that are on a page and are not contained in a frame by using Align Line from the Format menu. The keyboard equivalents Do A R and Do A L do not work as expected. WORKAROUND: Place the line(s) in a frame and then choose align again. Alternatively, you can use the Draw menu's Align dialog box, which works inside or outside a frame. 1.19.3 Using Encapsulated PostScript (EPS) Graphics The following sections describe information about using EPS graphics in DECwrite documents. 1-22 1.19.3.1 Encapsulated PostScript Files Using Carriage Returns as Line Separators PROBLEM: Some producers of Encapsulated PostScript files use carriage returns as line separators. DECwrite can only handle such files that use line feeds. As a result, the Encapsulated PostScript file will not print correctly. WORKAROUND: The carriage returns must be converted to line feeds with an editor or other utility. 1.19.4 Scaling Graphics and Frames This section describes release notes about scaling DECwrite graphics and frames. 1.19.4.1 Artifact of "Scaling Contents" of Vertical or Horizontal Line When Scale Contents is selected on the Scale dialog box, all dimensional and size attributes of an object are scaled. For example, the thickness of borders of objects are scaled. PROBLEM: If you scale the contents of a vertical or horizontal line, the thickness of the border of the line will not be scaled. WORKAROUND: Put the line in a frame and scale the frame. Or, group the line with other objects and scale the group. Or change the line's graphic attributes with the Graphic Attributes dialog box. 1.19.4.2 Scaling of Groups That Include a Frame PROBLEM: If a group contains a frame as one of its objects, scale and undo operations do not handle the positioning of any objects inside the frame correctly. The objects inside the frame are moved with respect to the frame. WORKAROUND: Scale the frame separately. 1.19.4.3 Undo Mirror Scaling of Frames and Data blocks PROBLEM: If you scale a frame or data block and turn it inside out (to produce a mirror image), undo does not position the objects as they were before the scale. 1-23 1.20 CDA Interoperability Notes 1.20.1 Using the CDA Viewer or CDA Converters with Multiplatform Documents PROBLEM: Documents edited and saved on one operating system (for example, OpenVMS VAX) will not work with the CDA viewer or with CDA converters on another operating system (for example, Microsoft Windows) unless DECwrite V3.1 is installed on that system. WORKAROUND: Open and save the file with DECwrite on the system on which you wish to view or convert. ________________________ Note ________________________ No extra steps are required to open the document in DECwrite. ______________________________________________________ 1.20.2 Named Content Streams PROBLEM: Some document files created by the High Level CDA Toolkit Routines from Digital's Electronic Publishing Systems Group will not be displayed as intended in DECwrite. Specifically, files which use named content streams to synchronize text content with different galleys will be displayed differently by DECwrite V3.1 and the CDA Viewer. 1.21 Miscellaneous Notes 1.21.1 On WPS-PLUS Keypad, Change Case Does Not Work Correctly PROBLEM: Using the WPS-PLUS keypad, the uppercase key (KP3) and lowercase key (Gold KP3) change the case of the whole word when no text is selected. WORKAROUND: Change case of the work back manually. 1.21.2 Selecting a Single Character PROBLEM: You cannot select a single character by dragging the mouse from left to right across the character. WORKAROUND: Use the keyboard to select the character or drag across the character from right to left. 1-24 1.21.3 Titles Created After a Page Break Character PROBLEM: If you create a title immediately after a Page Break character (with hidden symbols turned on), it will no longer honor any page style specified as part of the break to attributes of the title style. Note that this problem is triggered by the presence of the Page Break character when the title is created, and persists even if the Page Break is later removed. WORKAROUND: Copy just the text of the title (not including the ¦ at the end). Select and Clear the entire title and the Page Break character (do not use Cut or you will overwrite the title text). Insert a new title element and paste the text previously cut. In general, it is better practice to use a title's break to next page attributes rather than to insert Page Break characters. 1.21.4 Split into Columns Yields Wrong Ordering PROBLEM: If you use the split into columns operation, the draw order for the columns is incorrect. This produces the incorrect footnote numbering as a result. For example, if you use a four-column page, the draw order should be a sequential ordering 1-2-3-4; but instead, it is a nonsequential ordering 1-4-3-2. WORKAROUND: Correct the draw order using Draw => Front on each text block, working from left to right. 1.21.5 Paragraph Labels Appear as Numerals Instead of as Text PROBLEM: You cannot use paragraph text labels from within a numeric list. Such labels will seemingly appear as random numbers instead of as text. 1.21.6 Excessive Zooming Corrupts Display PROBLEM: When zooming on a document, sometimes the page display is corrupted. Corruption artifacts include: highlighting not displayed, the text cursor not visible, and other problems. WORKAROUND: If these display problems occur, zoom down to the next lowest level of magnification. Note that this problem should not occur unless the Window Scale Factor as shown in the Document Attributes dialog box is greater than approximately 300%. 1-25 1.21.7 Labels Copied by Global Select PROBLEM: Global select copies labels as well as text. For example, is you use global select to copy a list item from one DECwrite document to another, the bullet character for the list item will appear as a lowercase letter o when you paste the item. Global select allows you to copy selected regions between windows. You select text in one window with MB1 and paste it into another window with MB2. WORKAROUND: Delete the lowercase letter o after you paste the list item. 1.21.8 Overwritten Text on Adjust Position and Remove Adjustment PROBLEM: Remove Adjustment (following an Adjust Position) from the Format menu overwrites text in some circumstances. WORKAROUND: Select the line with the overwritten text and choose Remove Adjustment again. 1.21.9 Selecting multiple pages of text PROBLEM: A region of text can be selected by clicking on the start point of the region, moving to the end point of the region to be selected and pressing the Shift key and clicking again. However this may not work when the selected region spans multiple pages-clicking when the shift key is pressed may select the final textblock. WORKAROUND: Press the Select key at the start point of the region to be selected (or select a few characters using the mouse), and then use the cursor keys to extend the selection line by line to the end point of the region. 1.21.10 Starting Sublists Using Popup Menu PROBLEM: When the current insert point is not within a list, a title is created when Start Sublist is selected from the popup menu displayed by pressing MB3. It should instead start a new list. WORKAROUND: Use Insert List from the same popup menu to star a list. 1-26 1.21.11 Effect of Applying Styles to Labels of Paragraphs or Titles PROBLEM: Applying styles (or reapplying the current style) to a paragraph or title may affect the label differently than the content of the paragraph or title. Most notably, any attributes (such as bold, color, etc) of the content of the paragraph or title will be replaced by those defined in the style, but any attributes of the labels will not be changed. WORKAROUND: Select the labels and use the function bar buttons or Format menu to reapply the desired attributes. 1.21.12 Applying Text Attributes to Tables or Graphic Textblocks PROBLEM: Applying text attributes to a selected region will not modify text content contained in tables or graphic textblocks (i.e. in frames) within that region. WORKAROUND: Select the content of the tables or graphic textblocks and apply the desired text attributes. 1.21.13 Save a document to an unavailable drive PROBLEM: If an attempt is made to save a file to an unavailable network drive, DECwrite will display a message box reporting that it cannot access the drive. However DECwrite will "lock up" the PC until the drive becomes available again. 1.21.14 Saving a document after accessing content from a now unavailable drive PROBLEM: If a document or text file is included, imported or exported to/from a drive (for example, a floppy or network drive) which is unavailable when the document is saved (or DECwrite is exited), DECwrite will fail to save the document because it tries to access the unavailable drive (regardless of to where the document is saved). WORKAROUND: If DECwrite displays a dialog box reporting that the drive cannot be accessed, repeatedly choose the Cancel option. DECwrite may eventually save the document successfully. You should then exit DECwrite. 1-27 1.22 Transferring Documents between systems 1.22.1 Unnecessary Messages About Missing Fonts After Motif->Windows->Motif Transfer PROBLEM: If you open a document last saved with DECwrite for Microsoft Windows on any other DECwrite platform, and the document contains fonts in sizes other than 8, 10, 12, 14, 18, or 24, you will get unnecessary font fallback messages. These can be safely ignored. WORKAROUND: Use only sizes in the list above, and ensure that when you save the document in DECwrite for Microsoft Windows, it is displayed at 100%. 1.22.2 Wrong Fallback For Symbol-Bold On Motif Platforms PROBLEM: If you use DECwrite for Windows to create a document using the Bold attribute on characters created with the Symbol font and move it to DECwrite on a Motif platform, the bolded characters will be erroneously displayed as boxes. WORKAROUND: Use only the Symbol font with the normal (plain) attribute. 1.23 Additional Problems and Restrictions The following sections describe common problems and recommended solutions for DECwrite users. ___________________________________________________________ Problem____________________Solution________________________ Cannot use the numeric The keypad keys are reserved keypad to enter numbers. for users who want to assign macros to the keypad keys. To use the keypad for numeric data entry, define 10 macros, one for each key on the keypad.
