Audience
This guide is written for System Administrators or Database Administrators (DBAs) who install or upgrade Oracle products on OpenVMS systems. This guide assumes that you have a fundamental knowledge of the OpenVMS operating system; it does not document any features of OpenVMS except those that affect or are affected by Oracle7.
How this Guide Is Organized
This guide is organized as follows:
Chapter 1: Preparing for Installation
This chapter specifies features that are new with Oracle7 for Alpha OpenVMS Version 7.3.3. It identifies prerequisite tasks you must perform before installing Oracle software. This chapter also describes how to set up the Oracle7 Server and client accounts on OpenVMS and specifies the restrictions, quotas, privileges, and process rights identifiers the accounts must have.
Chapter 2: Understanding CD-ROM Structure and Content
This chapter describes the structure and content of the CD-ROMs.
Chapter 3: Installing the Oracle7 Server Bundle and Online Documentation
This chapter presents a step-by-step procedure for installing the Oracle7 Server Bundle.
Chapter 4: Installing Other Product Bundles into Your Server Environment
This chapter describes how to install other product bundles into your Server environment.
Chapter 5: Creating an Initial Oracle7 Database and Instance and Initializing Base Tables
This chapter describes how to use ORACLEINS to create an initial Oracle7 database and instance.
Chapter 6: Managing the Oracle7 Server
This chapter describes basic Oracle7 database administration procedures.
Chapter 7: Maintaining the Oracle Products
This chapter describes product installation maintenance procedures.
Appendix A: Oracle7 Product Configuration
This appendix describes configuration menus for selected Oracle products. The menus in this appendix are examples of screens that you see while running the ORACLEINS installation script.
Appendix B: OpenVMS Account Quotas and Privileges
This appendix describes OpenVMS account quotas and privileges for the Oracle7 database administrator account.
Appendix C: Oracle 64-bit Feature
This appendix gives recommended settings for the 64-bit feature, or Very Large Memory (VLM).
Conventions Used in this Guide
This section explains the following:
Syntax
This guide uses the following conventions:
| monospaced font | Monospaced font represents information displayed on a terminal or monitor or entered on a keyboard. For example, menu screens that are displayed during the Oracle7 installation procedure are represented in this guide with the monospaced font. |
| UPPERCASE | Uppercase words within the text refer to command names. |
| <variable> | <lowercase italicized words> enclosed by angle brackets within the text refer to variable names. |
Terminology
This guide uses the following terminology:
| Oracle | refers only to the company, Oracle Corporation, that develops and distributes the Oracle7 Server and Oracle products. |
| Oracle7 Server | refers to a single Oracle product. The Oracle7 Server is sometimes referred to as the kernel, the RDBMS, or simply Oracle7. The Oracle7 Server is the Oracle product that stores, manages, and manipulates data. It consists of the database manager, the database administrator utility called Server Manager, several user utilities (Export, Import, SQL*Loader, and the Database Verification Utility), and the data access optimizer. |
| Oracle7 System | refers to all the Oracle products installed at a site, including the Oracle7 Server and any optional tools such as Oracle Forms or SQL*Net, and to the structures created in shared OpenVMS memory when Oracle7 is running. Therefore, the correct definition of an Oracle7 system varies from site to site. Note that in this guide, the word database refers only to the files that contain data stored by the Oracle7 Server. |
| Product bundles | refers to Oracle products, such as Oracle7 Server and Developer/2000. |
Related Products and Documents
This section explains the following:
Related Products
The following is a list of Oracle products, utilities, and options that are available with the Oracle7 Server release:
- Advanced replication option
- Distributed database option
- National Language Support (NLS) or Multilingual option
- Programmatic Interfaces (Oracle precompilers)
Linking Restrictions
Products that are distributed with the Oracle7 Server Release 7.1 should not be linked against Oracle7 Server Release 7.3. Even though some of the product version numbers remain the same, products linked against Oracle7 Server Release 7.1 cannot be used with Oracle7 Server Release 7.3 unless you access either Oracle7 Server Release 7.1 or Oracle7 Server Release 7.3 using SQL*Net.
Installation Restrictions
For information about known installation restrictions, refer to the README files found on the distribution media.

Migrating from Oracle Release 6
Migrating directly from Oracle Release 6 for OpenVMS to Oracle Version 7.3.3 for OpenVMS is not supported. You can use the Migration Utility to migrate from Oracle Release 6 for OpenVMS to Oracle7 Version 7.1.5 for OpenVMS, and then upgrade your database to Oracle7 Version 7.3.3 for OpenVMS.
Oracle Release 6 is not supported on OpenVMS 7.0 or 7.1. You can, however, perform a full export from a version 6 database and import it into 7.3.
For more information about migrating from Oracle Release 6 to Oracle7, see Oracle7 Server Migration Guide.
